Writing a book report is not only challenging to students but money people as well. Book reports are informative just like a book review. However, book reports often concentrate on summaries of the book from an objective point of view. Many find writing book report challenging because it requires one to analyze a whole book, gives account on the original plot, discusses the theme, its thesis, the writer’s intentions, the characters and the primary objective of the book without forgetting the message in a minimal space. However, this resource will help you understand how to write a book report.

There are three forms of book reports namely:
-character analysis
-theme analysis
-plot summaries

Writing a book report enables you to give your opinion on an assigned work of art.

The types of literary forms used, mode of communication, style and all. However, when you decide to write a book report, there are specific elements that you need to put into consideration. These elements will express the reasons as to why you found the book either captivating or informative.

– Details of the book such as the author, number of pages, title, year published, the name of the publisher, the publisher’s location
– Name of the characters
– The book genre
– Direct quotes from the book
– The cover printing.

Steps of writing a book report

i) Identify a book and get the necessary basic information such as who is the author, are you familiar with the works of the author, what type of genre is the book, and is it fiction? Does the title spark your interest? Is the book cover appropriate?

ii) As you start reading
Make notes as you learn to keep track of and identify distinct characters, keep track of the events and turn of actions, get essential ideas and identify various symbols used.
Quotes – did you identify a particular quote that can be used in your report to support your argument or make your story more enjoyable?
Characters – who are the major characters, what roles did they play well
Main ideas- what does the book major on, what happens, how does it end

iii) As you write ensure your notes are well organized, use headings, bullets, and subheadings where necessary.
Now it is time to write, summarize what the book is all about, its essential elements, and the characters, what happens in the book, would you recommend the book to other people, how was the flow of the plot. As you do this, consider being creative.

i) In the first paragraph of your report, after announcing the author, book and publication identify the elements that you liked much about the book, how the author describes everything, how about and the characters. Does the story have a captivating and thrilling flow?

ii) In the body of the report, do an evaluation. Was the book appealing to you? Do this by giving opinion and remarks about the tone, motives and the thesis.

iii) Conclude by talking about the impacts of the book on you and if you can recommend it to others.

Final copy

Revise the final text by cross-checking if your reports answer the questions provided. Is there a flow in your work? Check on punctuation marks, grammar, and spellings. Give a detailed summary as a proof that you indeed read the book. Consider adding more quotes to spice up your report
